ABA Annual 2010: Make the Most of It (Get Involved)

We are really pleased to have so many attorneys from across the country (and beyond!) congregating in our own backyard for the ABA Annual Meeting. We considered posting a resource of things to do and places to eat in the San Francisco Bay Area - but, from past experience, know that your schedule likely will be too packed with seminars and ABA-sponsored social events to do much else.

You may not be fully familiar with another side to the Annual Meeting (and indeed, the ABA itself): the multitude of committees and boards comprised primarily of volunteers who help make the ABA what it is. These groups are integrally involved in the services, growth and direction of the ABA - and many will be meeting in San Francisco over the next few days. I encourage you to participate.

A few years back, when I attended my first ABA Annual Meeting, I noticed these same such listings for "committee" and "board" meetings in the program. I didn't know what these were or who could attend them - and wrongly assumed they were open only to ABA staff. Luckily for me, I found my way into one and asked. What I found were groups of friendly, welcoming, attorneys like myself, who were interested in being actively involved in the work of this important non-profit organization.

After attending a few more meetings at various ABA events, I was hooked.

I spent one year on the Education Board of the Law Practice Management (LPM) Section, and, for the past two years, have been a member of the the Editorial Board of the GP/Solo divisions' Technology and Practice Guide. I also had the honor of acting as the LPM's liaison to the Commission on Women in the Profession for one year, and have continued to be involved with the ABA Women Rainmakers.

My involvement as an ABA volunteer has been truly enriching: both the opportunity to contribute to a larger effort, and to be a part of a community of like-minded people. I encourage you to explore this side of the ABA if you think you may have any interest in getting more involved. [Note: while my involvement has been focused on women in the law and law practice, the ABA provides services to every substantive practice area - each of which has its own corps of volunteers and committees].

To find and attend committee meetings:

Find the practice areas of interest to you (organized by section on pages 97-199 of your program) and drop in to any listed meetings that catch your fancy. It's that easy.

BTW: I'll be at the ABA Women Rainmakers 20th Anniversary Reception in the offices of Winston and Strawn (101 California St., 39th Floor; Thursday Aug. 5; 5:30 to 7:00pm) - send a note if you'd like to connect. I'd love to meet you.

Two parts to this tip: one for anyone reading publications in Legal Updates; the other, for lawyers and legal professionals who use the application to upload and showcase their own legal content on the LinkedIn network.

1. Everyone: click 'Add to Network'

Anyone reading the array of publications delivered via Legal Updates can click 'Add to Network' to add the source of a particular piece of content to their LinkedIn network.

This is a powerful piece of functionality in the Legal Updates application:

If you discover an article, alert, or piece of legal analysis that resonates with you - offers helpful insights and perspective - you are now able to connect to the author of that article, simply by clicking 'Add to Network.' The link appears below the title and byline of documents in Legal Updates (example above) and takes you to the author's LinkedIn profile.

One caveat: in order for the 'Add to Network' to appear on a document, the doc's source/author must have connected their LinkedIn and JD Supra accounts. (All JD Supra content is visible in LinkedIn, but we do need to know who it belongs to in LinkedIn before we can connect it to a profile on that platform.) Which leads to...

2. Lawyers: connect your JD Supra and LinkedIn accounts

Legal professionals: if you have a portfolio of documents on JD Supra, take a minute to add Legal Updates in LinkedIn and connect your two accounts. Once we know who you are in LinkedIn (once we are able to point people to your LinkedIn profile) we can include the 'Add to Network' link in all of your documents, and point people directly to you in LinkedIn.

In this way, your content can help you to increase visibility and grow your network within LinkedIn. And once you've connected your two accounts...

How to Connect Your JD Supra & LinkedIn Accounts using 'Legal Updates'

What: learn how to join your LinkedIn and JD Supra accounts to maximize exposure on both platforms.

How:

After you add Legal Updates on LinkedIn, you'll find yourself on your custom Legal Updates Home, which includes a feed of documents matched to your profession/industry and, lower on the page, space for your JD Supra portfolio with the following message:

Click to "Import your JD Supra Portfolio"

This will take you to Account Management within Legal Updates, as shown below - specifically to a page in Account Management that reads:

Look for the prompt "Already a JD Supra Member?"

Enter your existing JD Supra login ID and password - then click to "Link My Accounts." This is a one-time action. (You can choose to disconnect accounts at any time.)

If You've Already Installed Legal Updates...

At any time, click the "Account" tab anywhere in the Legal Updates application. Scroll down the page looking for a Status update indicating whether your accounts are connected, as shown below:

Click "Link your accounts" now and follow the same process explained above (entering JD Supra login and password information).

Now, your accounts are connected. Every time you upload a document in either JD Supra or LinkedIn, it will be included on both platforms. Additionally your portfolio of JD Supra documents is visible to everyone on your LinkedIn profile. Finally, and most importantly:

When you connect your JD Supra and LinkedIn accounts, anyone who reads your work in LinkedIn can choose to add you to their network with a single click:

Bonus Tip: Connect for network updates

The next time you log in to your JD Supra account (at JDSupra.com), look for the "Sync to LinkedIn Now" prompt in several places on your Account Management page. Follow the steps to connect from JD Supra to LinkedIn.

This last, important step means that every time you upload a new document while on JD Supra (versus while inside LinkedIn using Legal Updates), your connections can read about it via a LinkedIn network update.

Bonus Bonus Tip: Promote Your Feed

Now that your JD Supra portfolio is included in your LinkedIn profile, inform your connections so they can see your work there. Tell them to click "Subscribe" at the end of your document list - your content (and future uploads) will be included in their own feed of Legal Updates on LinkedIn:

...if you want your JD Supra documents on your LinkedIn profile, at time of installation, make sure both default settings are selected, as shown below:

"Display on my profile" makes your docs visible on your LinkedIn profile.

Legal Updates on LinkedIn: How to Customize Feeds

What: learn how to customize feeds of legal updates on your LinkedIn homepage.

How:

When you first add legal updates to your LinkedIn homepage, we automatically match the feed of content to your industry or profession as noted in your LinkedIn profile. (Real estate content if you're in real estate; insurance to insurance professionals; employment law if you're in HR and related fields; law practice to lawyers; and so forth.)

Click any document in your feed, or click "See more" at the bottom of the Legal Updates module (on your homepage, as shown above). The latter takes you to a larger list of documents in your feed - and into a vast repository of legal information directly on LinkedIn, filled not only with legal documents, but also numerous subjects, people, and law firms to add to your feeds. Here's how:

1. Customize your feed while reading a document

Every document in Legal Updates includes a number of important links below its title and byline. One such, noted with arrow above, is "Add to Feeds." If you like the legal update you just read and want to read other writings by the same person or firm: click "Add to Feeds." Your Legal Updates homepage feed will include all future work by that source.

2. Customize while browsing a legal topic/subject

Two ways to customize your legal updates while browsing specific subjects on LinkedIn, both shown below.

If you want a feed of the entire subject, click "Subscribe to this Subject." All future documents on that topic will automatically stream to your LinkedIn homepage.

Additionally, each document listing includes an "Add to Feeds" link if you want to add the specific source to your feeds. (In example above, either Fenwick & West, or IP attorney Robert Matthews, Jr.)

3. Manage your feeds

At any time you can also click the "Account" tab in Legal Updates, among other things, to customize your feeds. Look in the left-hand navigational links (show below) for the option to manage your feeds.

Here you can remove any feeds you no longer want, and add other subjects and people as recommend by JD Supra.

Bonus Tip: Recommend Your Own Feed

If you are a JD Supra contributor, recommend to your LinkedIn connections to follow your own work directly on LinkedIN. Two ways you can do this:

1. Follow your feed yourself; it'll show up as a network update to all of your connections (Steve Matthews as example below)
2. Once you have connected your JD Supra and LinkedIn accounts, send out a note that your LinkedIn profie now includes your legal documents. Anyone can click "Subscribe" at the end of your document list to add you to their feeds.

What: learn how to recommend, share, and save legal updates in LinkedIn.

How:

Every document in the Legal Updates app includes three sharing links (as highlighted above) next to doc title and byline. Here's how each link works:

1. Click Recommend Document if you want to share the doc in a network update. Doubtless you've seen variations on such a recommendation in LinkedIn before:

2. Click Share Document to either send the doc to one of your LinkedIn groups, share only with particular individuals, or to feature as an update on your own profile.

Once you click "Share," a pop-up window walks you through the three choices (you're able to do any combination, or all at once):

3. Click Favorite to save the document for future reference in your own library of interesting content. (A favorite feature of mine, no pun intended.)

Access this list of interesting work at any time by clicking the "Favorites" tab within the Legal Updates application, as shown below:

All of these sharing functions (among others) are also available as you browse specific law subjects in the Legal Updates app:

I'm thrilled to announce that LinkedIn and JD Supra have launched Legal Updates, the first and only application specifically created to distribute legal content (and help lawyers connect with the right people) on the world's largest professional network.

Highlights of Legal Updates on LinkedIn

Any of the social network's 70+ million members can install Legal Updates to receive a feed of timely legal content (your work!) on their LinkedIn homepage, automatically matched to industry or profession.
Legal Updates are customizable: users can choose to follow specific subject feeds (Real Estate, Employment, Tech, etc.) or individual sources (you, the lawyers and law firms posting work on LinkedIn and JD Supra).
Legal Updates also creates the first browsable, searchable repository of legal information directly available on the LinkedIn platform.
Lawyers and legal professionals can use the app to upload their documents within LinkedIn; include a portfolio of written work directly on their LinkedIn profile; and choose to distribute their legal content to people on LinkedIn in the industries and fields they serve.
